The BRIT school entertained two visitors from Riddlesdown school with a view to looking at the schools provision for photography. Sam Hurley Head of Art at Riddlesdown and Jess Smith who will be teaching the new photography AS course at the school visited Leading Edge manager and BRIT photography teacher Chris Lewington to discuss course implementation and look around the BRIT school darkroom and photo studio.They also discussed AS delivery with leading Edge art manager Harrie Poole. Hopefully there are future prospects of a photography project involving both schools.

Its all Rocket Science for Selhurst children

Following on from the schools Little peoples day some of our year 10 BRIT students helped with a trip to the Science museum with Selhurst children's centre. The students accompanied the children by coach up to central London. At the museum the children saw the exhibits of space rockets and astronauts and then had a fun time in the museum's own experiential learning facility where the laws of science can be tested out to the rigours of play time. The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and managed to wear out all our students into the bargain.

Power to the Little People!

July 1st saw a special day organised for many of our neighbouring nursery and early years schools. Year 10 students put on a selection of events and shows around the theme of Space and invited the schools to spend a day with us in outer space. There were shows from dance (Setara and her journey to the stars), theatre, music, musical theatre and even glove puppets with visual art and design. The day started for the children with the mad professor making his test tubes bubble and explode and along the way the nursery children met with the planets and other astrological themed characters.
And did the children enjoy it? Well here's a response from one of the local nursery schools
"it was a fantastic day - we had a great time. We received lot of comments from the parents saying how wonderful the students are and also just how talanted. We appreciated that the students were so kind and caring towards our children.

Thanks to you all the staff and students for organising a great day."

Riders of the Storm

This year selected Year 12 BTEC National Diploma Visual Arts students are working with Addington High school's Year 8 Gifted and Talented students to create animation, sets and visuals for the BRIT school's annual Bloomsbury Theatre show which this year is called "After the Storm". So far our students have been designing and delivering workshops to Addington students involving screen printing, model making for sets and animation characters, T-shirt design, split pin puppets, typography and much more . All of this work has now been brought back to The BRIT School in order to use and develop for the show. the project has been initiated by leading Edge visual arts and design manager Harry Poole......Go to the Visual Arts and design blog to view student blogs and see how the project is developing....

High Velocity Norwood

In April this year some Year 10 Norwood performing arts students came to perform as part of the BRIT school dance department's show 'Escape Velocity' at Greenwich theatre in South London. The Escape Velocity show presented a diverse evening of dance entertainment featuring some of the best work by our post 16 dance strand students. As a culmination of the project that Leading Edge dance specialist Jodie Clarke has been working on with Norwood school, their students were invited to perform a piece in the same show. A fantastic experience for these students to be performing in a real working theatre to a live paying audience.

Sweet Dreams for Oak Lodge

The Dream, a unique and exciting project as deaf and hearing actors work on stage together.
Oak Lodge is a school for deaf students in Wandsworth. Ten year 9 students from Oak Lodge along with ten Year 12 Theatre students from BRIT have been working together and creating a short version of Midsummer Night’s Dream called The Dream.On April 27th they performed their version of Midsummer Nights Dream on stage in the school's Obie theatre to a live audience.
The project was initiated by Leading edge Theatre manager Simon Stephens and the collaboration has involved deaf awareness workshops for both staff and students with workshops focussing on acting skills and Shakespeare at Oak Lodge School.

Full Marks for Oklahoma workshop

Students from St. Marks a community school based in Mitcham took part in a workshop lead by Musical Theatre and Dance Leading Edge manager Lorraine Woodley. They were supported by students from the cast of this year's year 13 Musical Theatre show Oklahoma. The students started off with a general dance technique and then where taken through the contextual themes of Oklahoma, moving on to focus talking about the style of choreography in relation to the musical number 'Farmer and the Cowmen'. The students from St Marks then learned a section of this choreography themselves helped by Brit Musical Theatre students and performed it at the end of the workshop.

The students finished their day by watching a performance of the show. An enjoyable end to an enjoyable and highly rewarding day.

Gaining Ground with Melborn College

The BRIT school recently played host to a group of staff from Melbourn Village College in Cambridgeshire. The BRIT school will be supporting this school over the next two years. Melbourn's particular needs were to look at cross curriculum ideas and our vocational curriculum at Key stage 4 with a performing arts focus. Melbourn plan to build a new performing arts wing to their school and we have said that we would be keen for their students to come down here and see work and take part in workshops at the BRIT and in turn for our school to visit them. Our visitors had an enjoyable and informative day and left saying that it was so nice to feel so welcome, when they entered a lesson and class room they felt welcomed, wholeheartedly, by the staff and students.

Norwood Visit

The school entertained two visitors recently from Norwood school. Emma Thurstan, head of the faculty of Visual Art and Design and Ali Cowley from the art department. The faculty encompasses both Art and Technology and Emma and Ali wanted to gain a better idea of how things work at the BRIT school in the Technical Theatre Arts and Technology departments. They were keen to visit and look into ways of further improving their technology offer with particular reference to set and costume design.After a tour of the departments and talks with some of our students they enjoyed a performance of one of the Common Ground plays from the Theatre department in the Obie theatre. We now hope to discuss ideas for some collaborative work and also to develop stronger links between our departments at the the BRIT and Norwood.
And a word from Emma......... "We were both very inspired and both enjoyed talking to the set production students who we found to be so committed, enthusiastic and passionate about their course. Please can you pass on our thanks to the students. The performance was also really enjoyable to watch".

Fruity Festivities on BRIT FM

This Christmas was heralded in to the sound of the Pineapple club back on the airwaves on BRIT FM. This is part of an ongoing project initiated by media Leading Edge manager Jon Preston. Senior citizen's from the Pineapple club teamed up with students from another ongoing Leading Edge radio project from Saint Joseph's school in Beulah Hill to give us the Family Christmas show. Saint Joseph's is an all boys catholic school and the students that have been coming into the BRIT school to work on the project are all SENCO recommendations. The senior citizens from the Pineapple project are all from the local Afro Caribbean community and they were able to team up with the St Joseph's students to pass on the skills they have picked up running previous Pineapple club shows. It is a sign of the impact of the project that not only have St Joseph's remarked on the behavioural improvement of these students but they have now embarked on a similar project of their own involving some of their local senior citizens.

Visitors from the Oasis

Two members from the Oasis Academy in Bristol were visiting the BRIT school this week. They are looking to expand their delivery of performing arts through the school and wanted to have a look at the work and courses that the BRIT school runs. Our visitors spent quite a bit of their visit in the Technical Theatre/technology area of the school because they wanted to see how we integrate technology as a BTEC unit into all our KS4 performing arts strands. Leading Edge team member and head of Technology Chris Lewington was on hand to show them the department and some of the stage design work underway for the theatre departments common ground season.

New Expressions at Oak Lodge

Leading Edge dance and musical theatre specialist Lorraine Woodley has been working with Oak Lodge, a School for deaf students between the ages of 11 and 19. Lorraine says she first got in touch with them when she was asked to manage the BRIT school's Festival Week for Musical Theatre in 2008 and decided she would like the opening song to be ‘signed’.
Lorraine has been working with Oak Lodge teaching them choreography and technique. Lorraine says
" I thought that basic Laban notation symbols would be a good way to interact so I used that to help them learn a few basic skills, particularly how to communicate emotion through travel, signing and symbols".
At Oak Lodge the students have previously only copied people and this method allowed them to express themselves. " I wanted Oak Lodge to understand how important it is to have Dance education because physical expression is important in helping students develop their confidence and self esteem."

Strawberry Pickings Forever

Thursday 16th July saw the culmination of a Leading Edge project in which our year 12 theatre students performed a selection of plays written by year 10 students from Saint Mark's Academy in Merton. The project was initiated by Leading Edge theatre manager Simon Stephens who has worked with the students at St Mark's to help write the plays. The performances to the public took place at the Croydon Warehouse theatre as part of the BRIT theatre departments Strawberry Picking week long residency where plays written and performed by our students are performed. There were four plays from St Mark's students on offer looking at issues such as smoking and bullying. The St Mark's students clearly enjoyed the experience of working with our own students to realise the performance of their plays. Here's an email from Gabi Thomas the St Marks student who wrote Checkerboard, one of the plays performed

AWAY WITH THE FAIRIES

The BRIT school entertained children from two of our local schools this week to see our year 10 dance/ technology show "Fazana and the Fairy Garden". Nursery children from Selhurst Early Years centre and Reception children from Broadmead primary school came to see the show that tells the story of a little girl who likes to play with her fairy friends at the bottom of the garden and also dance with her creepy crawly insect friends. The show was a cross curricular project between technology whose year 10 students created the set and costumes and year 10 dance strand students who performed. The nursery children got to have a dance as well at the end and pretend they were a frog and a spider under the guidance of our dance students. As well as entertaining our nearest and smallest neighbours the project also aims to engender the seeds of possibilities in the performing arts at an early age.

JAMMING AT THE PINEAPPLE CLUB

The Pineapple club is a radio project run by Leading Edge radio manager Jon Preston that invites senior members of the local West Indian community to come in and create their own radio show. Following on from their success last year the members of the Pineapple West Indian Luncheon club in Anerly have been in September and Christmas time and now this summer term to lay down their own mix of smooth Caribbean rhythms and interviews. Pineapple members work with some of the BRIT students to create the radio show from both in front and behind the microphone.

LITTLE BIG MENU PROVES A HUGE HIT!

Students from Saint Mary's Junior school have been into the BRIT school to work with Leading Edge radio manager Jon Preston and create their own show "The Little Big Menu". The aim of the project is to encourage an enduring interest in media and radio and develop teamwork amongst the children. The project has been running a number of years now at the school, each year bringing in year 6 students in their last year of Junior school to experience working in the BRIT radio studio.

St Joseph's school have been very happy with the impact of the Radio project on their year 9 & 10 students. Students from Saint Joseph's college in Beaulah Hill South East London have been working on a radio project with our Leading Edge radio manager Jon Preston through out terms 3 and 4 this year. The project has been created with the BRIT school and St Joseph's SENCO team to help engender positive involvement and learning amongst the students involved.

Instant Karma with Yellow Flowers

On February 4th and 5th Year 10 students performed in a show about Tibet called Yellow Flowers. The show was a combination of work from year 10 Technology students, year 12 Technical Theatre students and the year 10 Theatre GCSE option students. The show aimed to highlight the continuing plight of the Tibetan people under Chinese occupation since the 1950's and subject to continuing imprisonment, torture and human rights abuses. The show included the screening of an interview with Tibetan dissident and singer Soname Yangcheng shot by the schools Film and digital arts team led by Ken McGill. The theme of the show was an adaptation of Tibetan folk tales by Theatre teachers Stuart Warden and Andrew Midgley. The set and costumes were designed and made by Year 10 Technology students as part of their Technical theatre studies for their BTEC Performing arts qualifications. The year 12 Technical Theatre students erected the set and provided lighting, sound and technical experience. It was an example of a typical project that the school has become very adept at where a number of different strands and years come to together to create a project on a cross curricular basis.

I'd like to be Under the sea.....

Children from the "Selhurst Early Learning Centre" visited the school on Thursday to see a special dance show put on especially for them. The show "Octopus's Garden" tells the story of Oscar, a little boy who jumps into a puddle and finds an undersea world where he can dance with the fishes in an Octopus's garden. A few weeks earlier in the term the year 10 dance strand students had accompanied the children, who are between 3 and 4 years old, to the Horniman's museum in south London to see the aquarium and learn about the undersea world and animals that live there. Now our dance students were performing their dances that they had choreographed for the children in costumes and a set made by year 10 performing arts students in their Technology lessons. The project was set up and run by leading edge managers Ganymeade Gnahoui and Chris Lewington.

A day at the Emirates

Members of the BRIT school Leading Edge team met up with representatives from some of our partner schools at the Achievement show staged at the Emirates stadium in north London. It was the perfect setting for consolidating plans and discussing new avenues to pursue for the year ahead. Staff from Hayling Manor, Capital and Shirley joined us for a day in an executive box at the Arsenals' gleaming new stadium. There were plenty of inspiring talks and the latest in educational technology to see in the show as well as time to talk with partner schools and continue to develop our partnerships in the year ahead.

Westminster students in for Workshops

Year 10 students from Westminster Academy in north London visited the school this morning. They had a tour of the school followed by workshops in dance, theatre and music. Westminster is a business and enterprise specialist school but they have a thriving performing arts department as well. Their performing arts teachers lead by Lucy Sands hoped that a day at the BRIT school would give their students added confidence in working with students their own age in their own specialist area. So our year 10 students worked side by side with their year 10 students in the workshops. "Our students really enjoyed themselves especially participating in the subject lessons" said Lucy. "Many students commented on how nervous they were about participating in the classes and thought they would not be able to cope with the work, but taking part in the lessons made them realize they could cope really well. Thank you to all the teachers and students who lead the classes they made our students feel really welcome. The trip has had a very positive effect on their confidence". . Before they went home our year 10 Musical Theatre students gave them a short performance of some of their numbers from "Hair" which they had performed as a whole show as part of their BTEC last term.

Fins go swimmingly at the Hornimans museum

Year 10 dance strand students and children from our local nursery school "The Selhurst Early Learning Centre enjoyed a trip to see the Aquarium at the Horniman's museum on Thursday 5th June. Organised by leading edge team members Ganymeade Gnahoui and Chris Lewington, as part of the Octopus's Garden project. In a few weeks time our year 10 dancers will perform to the nursery children in a show called Octopus's Garden, a show where the students make the set and costume in Technology lessons as well as perform as part of their strand. To set the scene for their young audience the students accompanied the nursery children on a trip to the aquarium at the Horniman museum in South London where the children dressed up as fish and discovered more about our undersea world. A good day was enjoyed by all and the Selhurst children can't wait to see their new older friends dance for them in a few weeks time.

On the Telly with Teachers TV

Teacher’s TV with their partner production company Lambent productions came and visited for 2 days, Wednesday 6^th and Wednesday 13^th of February. Leading Edge manager Conor Doherty provided and planned the content of the shows and liaised with Lambent productions. On the first day they interviewed Conor extensively about strategies for teaching world music for GCSE and A Level. Lisa Hampson, music teacher at St Georges VA School Harpenden visited on the second day and spent the day with Conor and groups of BRIT music students learning and analysing music from West Africa. Conor provided an information pack for her to use as a basis for her world music lessons with KS 3 and 4. All these days were filmed and will form the basis of a documentary which will be shown soon on Teacher’s TV and will be available to download. Our students gained valuable experience of performing for television and how a programme is made. St. Georges School benefited from curriculum enrichment and some professional development for their music teacher. A very interesting and enjoyable experience for all involved.

Stars in their Eyes at Hailing Manor

Leading Edge managers Luis Domingues and Conor Doherty took a group of Year 13 music students to Hailing Manor school to help them prepare for their ‘Stars in Their Eyes’ talent show. Each of our BRIT school students was given a group of approximately 10 students and (Yrs 7-11) and they led a discussion about the best way to prepare for performance. The discussions carried on for 45 minutes, after which all group summarised the findings of their discussion. At the end Brit School student Indie sang for the whole group unaccompanied, getting a fantastic response. Hailing Manor teacher Andrea Phillips was extremely pleased with the session and thanked our students and staff.

BRIT links up with Harris Academy for music

As part of our ongoing and very successful relationship with Harris Academy (formerly Stanley Tech), Leading Edge manager Conor Doherty was visited by music teacher Kwadjo Amponsen and his colleagues from Harris Academy. They worked on ways of delivering the BTEC 1^st Certificate in Music which Harris have started to deliver this year for the first time. The music department here at the BRIT school has been teaching it for some years and it forms the basis of the Key Stage 4 strand course.

Conor says "This follows on from a meeting I had last summer where I went over the basic framework of the qualification with Kwadjo. We looked at assignments and talked though some possible ways of delivering the practical and academic parts of the course. The meeting had a very positive outcome with some helpful ideas put forward. Personally, from an educational point of view I found it very interesting."

We also discussed the possibilities of doing more practical work with Harris students, similar to last year. We are hoping to facilitate this before the end of the year.

Making links with Bridge Academy

After receiving an invitation, Leading Edge manager Conor Doherty attended the opening ceremony for the new Bridge Academy Building at St. Lukes in Old Street. The purpose was to represent the school and to meet with Clifford Resse, the head of music to arrange our students going to help the facilitators in various arts workshops that they have scheduled during the year.Conor says "I met with Daisy Surcliffe, the Education manager for The Hackney Empire who was overseeing the project. We discussed various possibilities and agreed that our students would come on a number of Fridays to help with preparations. This would also be an excellent opportunity for our students to gain teaching experience and is planned for the summer. We are also hoping to work soon with the school on curriculum delivery".

BRIT music students at Linden Bridge School

Leading Edge team member, Conor Doherty brought a group of Yr 12 ethnomusicology students to Linden Bridge School for autistic students. We rehearsed in advance and hired a minibus to bring ourselves and equipment, says Conor. We put on a performance for the school and then got their students involved with dancing and singing. The response was very positive from the staff and students and brought some West African music into the Lynden curriculum. Our own BRIT school music students gained valuable experience of working with autistic children and increased their performance confidence.

Westminster visit the BRIT

Some 27 students and 3 of their teachers from the Westminster Academy visited the BRIT school on Thursday 29th November. The students enjoyed work shops with BRIT teachers and students in dance, music and theatre. The workshops gave the Westminster students a chance to interact with BRIT students the same age who are studying in areas of the performing arts relevent to them. After the workshops the visitors enjoyed a matinee performance of the post 16 dance showcase "Illuminating Motion" which features the performances of our year 12 and 13 BTEC dance students. A good day was had by all and hopefuly Westminster students went home with encouragement in their own performing arts talents and renewed aspirations for the future.
Westminster Academy specialises in international business and enterprise and have just moved to a new purpose built school on the Harrow Road. The schools visit was arranged as part of the BRIT schools ongoing Leading Edge program to encourage good and innovative practice in the performing arts between our partner schools

Seven heaven!!!!!!

It was the culmination of the joint BRIT school and Selhurst boys school's boys writing project that has been happening all this year. At Croydon's Warehouse theatre a group of year 12 BRIT theatre students performed the play written by year 11 students from Selhurst boys school "Deadly Seven". A packed house enjoyed the light hearted piece based on the seven deadly sins. The BRIT's theatre teacher and leading edge practitioner Luis Domingues has been working with the boys to fashion the script ready for performance at the Warehouse during the school's Strawberry Picking season.

Return of the Magnificent Seven

Theatre teacher Luis Domingues seen here discussing a first read through of "the deadly seven" with his year 12 Theatre students. The play is the collaborative work of students from our neighbouring school Selhurst High and some of our own students. The play is based on the theme of the seven deadly sins. It is the product of the creative writing classes that Mr Domingues has been taking in Selhurst as one of the school's Leading Edge projects. The play will debut in the Strawberry Picking season at Croydon Warehouse theatre 11th -13th July

Update on Selhurst Boys Play Writing Project

The play writing project is a collaboration between the BRIT school and our neighbouring school Selhurst Boys school, to involve their students in creative writing and produce a script that will be performed in public.

The collaborative script is now complete, and copies have gone to all cast members, who are a mix of mainly BRIT students plus a few Selhurst boys (their participation as cast is limited as they are year 11 and are currently in exams).

This is a great achievement for the project; none of the Selhurst boys have written a play before, so this is a big step.

Rehearsals will begin the first week back after the holidays, going right up to the BRIT schools own "Strawberry Picking" play season.

Emmanuel, one of the Selhurst boys, has been selected by Mike Cloherty, Head of Drama at Selhurst, to be the point of focus for the short film that Ken McGill is putting together as evidence for the project.

As part of Leading Edge I have been setting up links with Pepperton Uk, a fantastic arts cafe in Selhurst. This is so that students understand the importance of exhibiting, the stages you have to go through in order to do this, understand how to curate a show and exhibit their work!

Recently we had an exhibition of our BRIT Yr 12 BTEC National and Yr 11 BTEC First students. It was a great success and the private view was really great fun. Stanley Tech students under siege

Friday morning and year 10 students from Stanley Technical High school arrive for a theatre lesson at the BRIT school. This is one of a series they are doing with our leading edge practitioner Simon Stephens in a project exploring the Beslan school siege in Russia. Things start well, introduction from Simon, warm up session, the boys are moving around the room doing their warm up then WHAM!!!lights out! total darkness! people shouting everywhere! freeze! don't move! shut up! if you want to stay alive do as I say!
Oh yes, the Stanley Tech students have got a bit more than they bargained for. Totally unexpected to them, our BRIT year 13 theatre students take on the role of the terrorists and put the boys through a taste of those siege conditions. All part of bringing home the reality of the roles they are playing.

Year 7 students from local Croydon school Stanley Tech visited the school this week with their tutor for a one day workshop inspiring them to greater involvement in music making. The boys worked with Brit music tutor Conor Doherty and some of our year 12 music students. There were two workshops. The first saw our musicians work with the boys to create a band/vocal performance of Outkasts' Hey Ya. The second workshop gave students the chance to experience the complex and multi layered rhytems of Ghanian drumming.

Selhurst boys get in on the act

The playwriting project is a collaborative initiative between the Brit school and our near neighbours Selhurst High School. Initiated by English/Theatre teacher and leading edge team member Luis Domingues. The aim is to create a collaboratively written play that will be performed at the Warehouse theatre in Croydon. The Selhurst boys get a taste of Brit school style theatre lessons for the playwriting project. Luis Domingues is leading the project along with Mike Cloherty, head of drama at Selhurst High school and year 12 Brit theatre students have also been involved in working on this creative writing project.

The theatre department were approached by Emilie Brothers, Head of Drama at Stanley Technical High School, Croydon to support her Christmas Show. This support came in the form of Year 13 theatre students working as assistant directors/workshop leaders alongside Emilie in the preparation and rehearsal of this their show.
The piece was a pantomime with a social conscience exploring ‘green’ issues within the genre and style of pantomime.
The first week of the partnership involved the student from Stanley Tech attending a workshop at The Brit School led by Simon Stephens and Imogen Brodie of the theatre department supported by a number of year 13 theatre students.
Over the next five weeks the Brit School students supported the Stanley rehearsals every Friday afternoon culminating in the performance of the show on Wednesday 13th December at St Mary Magdalene’s Church in Addiscombe.
The relationship with Stanley and the drama department particularly, will hopefully continue and develop, initially with the attendance of the Stanley students at performances and workshops during the Brit School Theatre department’s Common Ground season.

BRIT Visual Arts and Norbury Manor B & E College Collaboration

This exciting collaborative project focused on sharing the skills of the teachers involved, student mentoring and the fusion of the traditional and digital visual arts curriculum. Year 11 students from both schools joined to experience workshops in pinhole and digital photography, stop frame animation and then rotascoping. So far the students have had the first two workshops and will experience the third in January. This is also part of a Lead Practitioner scheme that is Lead by the Director of the Visual Arts at the BRIT School who has presented about this work to Head Teachers in Croydon for the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT).
